The school year has officially begun and we are yet again thankful to have coaches who give countless hours to our student athletes to make them the best version of themselves!
We are happy to welcome four new coaches to our staff this year – read an introduction about them below!
Dean Fitzner, Head Baseball Coach –
Dean has dedicated 20 years to coaching baseball, culminating in a state championship in 2012 at Jarrell High School. Throughout his career, Dean has amassed 325 career wins and led teams to the postseason 15 times, securing over 30 postseason victories. His leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed, earning him Coach of the Year honors and an All-Star Coach designation.
Abigail Payne, Head Dance Coach and Spirit Coordinator –
Abigail’s 17-year tenure as the Dance Director for the Lake Travis Cavalettes showcases her pursuit of excellence in the performing arts. Her active involvement in the Texas Dance Educators Association has broadened her educational and leadership skills and greatly enriched her impact. Abigail has been instrumental in her students’ academic achievements, with numerous members of the Cavalettes earning National Merit Scholar recognition.
Sonya Schement, Head Cross Country Coach –
Sonya has over 10 years of coaching experience, becoming a running performance coach with certifications including The Cooper Institute of Dallas - CPT, The National Academy of Sports Medicine - CPT, and USA Track & Field Level 2 Certified Jumps Coach. Sonya is also a current assistant track and field coach for sprints and jumps at St. Michael’s Prep. Training runners to take their abilities to the next level, Sonya has taken athletes to competitions all over the country, including AAU Junior Olympics and multiple state track meets.
Mackey Smith, Head Girls Basketball Coach –
Mackey is a current teacher at St. Michael’s Prep and has been coaching and teaching at the school for over 20 years. His coaching career includes taking seven team to the Final Four, including one season as the head girls basketball coach at IWA in Corpus Christi, one season as an assistant girls basketball coach at St. Michael’s Prep, and two seasons as the head boys basketball coach at St. Michael’s Prep.
