REQUIREMENTS FOR EARNING A VARSITY LETTER


In Upper School Athletics at St. Michael’s Prep, earning a varsity letter is a distinguished honor that recognizes a student-athlete’s dedication, perseverance, and achievement. The requirements for earning an Upper School varsity letter are outlined below. While earning a varsity letter is a significant milestone, all Upper School student-athletes at St. Michael’s Prep are eligible to purchase a letterman jacket, regardless of whether they have earned a varsity letter. For more information about purchasing a letterman jacket, please contact the Athletic Department.


Team Sport Requirements Volleyball, Football, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Lacrosse, Baseball, Sapphire Dance, Cheer

A student-athlete may earn a varsity letter by meeting the following criteria:

  • Participates in and is recorded in the official scorebook or competition for at least 50% of the team’s scheduled varsity games or performances during the season.

  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and commitment to the team, as determined by the head coach’s discretion.

  • Seniors who have actively participated in the program for at least two seasons.

  • Maintains good academic standing throughout the school year.



Individual Sport Requirements Cross Country, Swimming, Track and Field, Golf, Tennis

A student-athlete may earn a varsity letter by meeting the following criteria:

  • Participates in and is recorded in the official scorebook or competition for at least 50% of the team’s scheduled varsity meets or matches during the season.

  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and commitment to the team, as determined by the head coach’s discretion.

  • Seniors who have actively participated in the program for at least two seasons.

  • Maintains good academic standing throughout the school year.

  • Placed or participated in the TAPPS State Championship.
