St. Michael's athletes competed in the TAPPS Track and Field State Championship on Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th at Panther Stadium in Hewitt, Texas. As the final meet of the track season, the TAPPS State Championship brings together the top-eight athletes or relay teams, four each from TAPPS North and South Regionals, to compete for the title of State Champion in each of the events. St. Michael's had 16 athletes attend the meet, eight boys and eight girls, who participated in seven events. While there were no state champions crowned this year, Cole Nguyen ('25) placed 2nd in the boys’ pole vault, despite being hampered by an injured foot. The other athletes who competed performed commendably and proudly represented the school and the rest of their teammates from the track and field season.
Final results from the State Meet were as follows:
For varsity boys:
Cole Nguyen (’25) – 2nd in Pole Vault; Ethan Dang (’25) – 6th in Long Jump; Max Pahlke (’24) – 7th in High Jump; 4x400M Relay (Hodapp, Queralt, Patino, Dang) – 8th.
For varsity girls:
Ruthie Zboril (’27) – 7th (PR) in 100H; and 4X200M Relay (Lorenz, Koberg, Kadenacy, Kalsu) – 7th (SB).
Congratulations to all athletes who participated in track and field this season. A huge THANK YOU to the coaches for a job well done in preparing the athletes each week, including holding training during their spring break. And all the best to all of the seniors who will be graduating in a few weeks.
With the team being made up of a large number of underclassmen who will be returning athletes next year, the coaches are excited at the possibilities ahead and are expecting faster times, longer distances, higher heights, cumulating with more District and Regional victories and state championship qualifiers from the individual athletes and relays.
